I decided to get serious about losing weight this year. I've been varying degrees of fat for my entire adult life, and I'm sick of being tired all the time, feeling like shit, and looking like shit.
So I installed MyFitnessPal, set myself a limit of 1500 calories a day, and the weight has been falling off me consistently. It almost feels too easy, weirdly. I haven't changed anything else about my lifestyle whatsoever. I'm still pretty sedentary, and I haven't really changed *what* I eat. I just eat less of it, and I cut out the unhealthy snacks and the beer.
A typical day looks like:
Breakfast: Instant Oatmeal packet with semi-skimmed milk, 50g blueberries, one small latte.
Lunch: Soup and one slice of wholemeal bread
Dinner: Whatever I would usually have. I make sure to leave enough calories for a filling and healthy dinner. Last night we had mushroom risotto, for example.
Snacks: not many. I realized early on that the vast majority of my overeating was coming through snacking on chips and sweets, so I simply cut them out entirely. If I have the calories to spare and I'm so hungry I really can't wait for the next meal, I'll munch on some fruit or a granola bar, something like that.
I drink 3-4 cups of tea with milk throughout the day, which usually adds around 100 calories per day I would estimate, and other than that it's just water. I can't justify the 100 calories for a can of fizzy lemon drink which I used to enjoy, because that's 100 calories I could have at dinner instead which is so much more worthwhile.
The only difficulty I've had so far is that the first few days I was REALLY hungry. But once I stuck with it, it's like my body has gotten used to burning its reserves and it's less awful. I do still get hungry in the hour or so leading up to meals, but I guess I can't expect to be running at a 1000 calorie deficit without feelings of hunger. The bonus is that once I do eat, it is SO much more enjoyable. I realized that before, I never actually felt real hunger. Eating a meal when you're really goddamn hungry is amazing!
Anyway, I hope this might provide some encouragement to anyone else thinking about starting their journey. On my current trajectory, I should be at my goal weight sometime around the middle of the year, and I can't wait!
