Starting my fat loss journey has allowed me to enjoy better junk food

I started a fairly strict diet on June 1st and am down 45 pounds since then. I've allowed myself one untracked cheat meal per week (usually Friday or Saturday night) and have stuck to that.

Before I started this diet my typical day of eating looked like this:

  • Breakfast: Cafe Mocha ($6) and glazed donut ($4)
  • Lunch: A fast food sandwich/burger/wrap + fries ($13)
  • Dinner: Some sort of takeout/delivery, usually ~$20-25

I was eating terribly and spending nearly $50/day doing it.

Since my diet began, my typical day of eating looks like this:

  • Meal 1: Either a cafe mocha ($6) or 6" Subway double turkey sandwich ($7) - I alternate between these every day
  • Meal 2: 1/2 cup egg whites ($0.69), 1 egg ($0.25), 3 slices canadian bacon ($0.33), 1/2 cup mixed veggies ($0.50), half a grapefruit ($0.72)
  • Meal 3: 6 oz. skinless chicken thigh ($2.26), 2 cups lettuce ($0.43), 2 tbsp salad dressing ($0.33), 1/2 oz. parmesan cheese ($0.31), 1 can diet pepsi ($0.38)
  • Meal 4: 1 scoop whey protein ($1.11), 1/2 oz. mixed nuts ($0.26), 3 fish oil capsules ($0.21)

I've gone from spending $50/day on food to less than $15/day.

As a result of the strict diet and financial benefit, I have really prioritized having great cheat meals (something I never really cared about nor could afford before since every meal was a cheat). I live in a city (Chicago) with Michelin-starred restaurants that I've never even dreamed of going to because I always felt like they were for really special occassions, plus I couldn't afford them. Well now that I only get ~50 of these meals per year, every single one has become a special occassion.

Last week I was able to go to a nice steakhouse and spend $150 on a meal and not feel guilty about it. In November I have a reservation at Alinea, something I've been wanting to do for a decade but finally am actually doing because of this diet.

Never thought that eating healthier would allow me to cheat better too.
