Since I started counting calories 42 days ago (42-day streak on MFP, yey!), I can count on one hand how often I've eaten rice. I was born in the Philippines and now live in Sweden, and rice has always been in my meals with both my lunches and dinner consisting of a huge amount of rice. After I started counting calories and weighing my food, I'm honestly scared of rice now. The few times I've eaten rice, I've been careful of only taking 150-gram rice which is equivalent to 530 calories (holy mother of god!). What scares me though is that when I didn't count calories, I'd wager that I was eating 300 - 500-gram rice which would an excess of 1k+ calories in one sitting and that's not even counting any vegetable and protein that I would have with it. And repeat that twice a day, and perhaps even three times a day if I wanted seconds.
No wonder I was gaining weight despite exercising frequently. I was probably eating somewhere around 3 000 calories daily. I'm still not ready to completely get rid of rice though, but I'll most likely limit myself to eating it two or three times every month now. There are so many healthier alternatives to it, and I don't need to dread to watch my calories count before going to bed after having eaten rice.
