Hi everyone! Please redirect me if this isn’t the right subreddit for my questions.
I’m trying to take control over my weight finally and I signed up for a gym (Planet Fitness). I’ve surprised myself with the regularity with which I’ve been going, which is great. As I’ve NEVER been a gym-goer I’ve been chalking everything up to attendance. I’ll go, walk a mile or two on the treadmill or elliptical, call it a day and leave. I’m super intimidated by all of the machines and frankly don’t even know what half of them are for. I have a significant amount of weight to lose (100+ lbs) so I figure any type of exercise is better than doing nothing, but I really want to incorporate some other kind of activity.
I have super basic questions: How do I know at what weight to set these machines? Is it better to concentrate on one body part (legs, arms, etc) per day or is leg day a myth? Are free weights better or worse than machines?
